Why buy handmade?

Someone posted on Instagram today about prices of handmade jewellery and it got me thinking. I know I have posted about this before but it is always worth saying it again. Why should you buy handmade?

"Its so expensive".

"I can buy it cheaper off Amazon / Temu / Aliexpress".

Let me explain why you should consider handmade.

Handmade jewellery stands as a symbol of craftsmanship, individuality and sustainability. Handmade pieces offer a depth of meaning and quality that mass produced alternatives simply cannot replicate.

  1. Uniqueness and individuality

One of the most appealing aspects of handmade jewellery is its uniqueness. Every piece is crafted with attention to detail and a personal touch that sets is apart from the uniformity of mass produced items. When you buy something from me you are buying a one-of-a-kind or limited edition item, ensuring that no one else will have exactly the same piece. This is perfect for people who want to express their personal style or who value owning something truly unique.

2. Superior craftmanship and quality

Handmade jewellery is a labour of love. I spend hours designing and creating each piece. I often make several versions before settling on the final design and each detail is carefully crafted. Unlike factory made items where machines often do most of the work, handmade pieces reflect my skills, expertise and passion. I take pride in my work, I use recycled silver where I can but do not skimp on quality. My work is designed to be individual and to last for generations.

3. Ethical and sustainable choice.

Fast fashion has a significant environmental and ethical impact. I have written a blog post about this here https://www.hareandmoonjewellery.co.uk/post/is-silver-the-new-gold

Mass production often involves unethical labour practices and materials sourced from unsustainable operations. I use recycled silver where I can. My packaging is recycleable. My earrings cards grow wildflowers if you plant them. Additionally, by buying my jewellery you are supporting a small business and an independent artisan who will prioritize sustainability and ethical labour practices over profit.

4. Supporting independent artisans.

Like I just said above when you buy from me and from other small businesses you are supporting a real person and not a large corporation. Beyond the financial support you provide by buying my jewellery (which allows me to keep making more gorgeousness for you), you are encouraging creativity and innovation. I can make pieces that are more meaningful and distinctive than the mass produced pieces that can be found on the internet.

5. Customisation and personalisation

Handmade jewellery offers opportunities for you to have a piece personalised. Whether you want a specific gemstone or your initial set into a piece or like the pictire on the right, a specific request for adornments on a bangle. This means that my jewellery can be the ideal choice for special occasions such as weddings, anniversaries or birthdays and a personalised gift can carry sentimental value.

Handmade jewellery is more than just an accessory, it is an expression of art, individuality and ethical values. By choosing to invest in handmade pieces, you are not only acquiring a unique and high quality item bit also supporting an independent artisan and promoting sustainable practice. Whether you are drawn to the craftsmanship, the ethical appeal, or the opportunity to own something truly one-of-a-kind, handmade jewellery offers a richness that mass produced alternatives cannot match.

Shop handmade and support small businesses.
